South Korea Considers Combat Uniform Replacement Following Martial Law Incident

DEFENSE

South Korea's military is contemplating a complete replacement of combat uniforms due to reputational damage from a Dec. 3 martial law episode. The Ministry of National Defense is discussing a new uniform plan via a task force investigating alleged insurrection involvement by public officials.

The current digital camouflage uniforms, in use since 2010, may be seen as symbols of insurrection sympathy. However, replacing them would incur significant costs, including production and disposal of millions of uniforms, potentially diverting funds from urgent defense priorities against North Korean threats.

Critics argue that uniform changes should enhance battlefield performance rather than serve political purposes, suggesting improved identification markers could address imitation concerns without full replacement. A decision is expected early next year amid ongoing debate about the necessity and justification for such a costly change.
