Southeast Michigan Coalition Advocates for Maritime Prosperity Zone to Boost Shipbuilding Industry

DEFENSE

A coalition in Southeast Michigan, comprising over 30 organizations, is advocating for the region to be designated as a Maritime Prosperity Zone (MPZ) to enhance the U.S. shipbuilding industry. This coalition includes the University of Michigan and Macomb Community College and aims to capitalize on Michigan's extensive shoreline, active ports, and manufacturing expertise.

Established by an Executive Order in April 2025, MPZs are intended to attract domestic investment in shipbuilding and port infrastructure. The coalition's proposal includes Washtenaw, Monroe, Wayne, and Macomb counties, which possess vital geographical and industrial assets.

The region is already developing a maritime strategy with significant investments, including a $50 million initiative in collaboration with the U.S. Navy. Key projects involve advancements in fuel technologies at the Port of Detroit and upgrades at the Port of Monroe to enhance international shipping capabilities.
