SPSA and AMP Robotics Launch AI Waste Sorting Initiative in Virginia
The Southeastern Public Service Authority (SPSA) has partnered with AMP Robotics Corporation in a 20-year deal to implement AI-powered waste sorting technology. Announced in late 2025, the project aims to process up to 150 tons of waste daily, potentially diverting 50% of municipal solid waste from landfills and doubling recycling rates.
AMP's AI-driven sortation technology uses computer vision and machine learning to accurately identify and separate recyclable materials from mixed waste streams. This initiative is expected to create jobs in engineering and operations while reducing local governments' disposal costs.
The project also aligns with sustainability goals by minimizing methane emissions from landfills. By 2029, households in SPSA's service area will transition to single-stream recycling, simplifying waste disposal and enhancing participation rates.
