St. Maarten Government Prioritizes Electricity Stability Over LNG Transition, Says PM Mercelina

NATURAL GAS

The St. Maarten government is prioritizing the stabilization of the electricity grid over a transition to liquefied natural gas (LNG), according to Prime Minister Dr. Luc Mercelina.

During a parliamentary session, he clarified that no comprehensive fuel diversification plan has been requested from NV GEBE or Port St. Maarten Group. The focus remains on ensuring a consistent power supply for residents and businesses.

Discussions on port operations include electrification and alternative energy initiatives, while a study by Energynautics indicates that diesel generators are currently more cost-effective than transitioning to LNG. No tenders for LNG-related fuel or transport proposals have been issued, and NV GEBE is required to comply with its electricity concession.

The government is also working on tariff regulations to maintain affordable electricity prices. Investments in renewable energy sources will support the vision for stability and sustainability in St. Maarten's energy supply.
