Statkraft Completes Indigenous Consultation for Los Lagos Hydroelectric Project in Chile
HYDRO POWER
The Chilean National Monuments Council has concluded a four-year consultation regarding archaeological findings at Statkraft's Los Lagos hydroelectric project. The project, nearing 99% completion, has faced delays due to archaeological concerns and consultations with the Mapuche-Huilliche communities.
A two-year delay has added approximately $50 million to costs. Allegations of police misconduct related to the consultation process have emerged, raising questions about human rights adherence. The project aims to provide 52 MW of clean energy, contributing to Chile's sustainability goals.
