Tamar Estuary Hosts Australia's First Tidal Energy Turbine by MAKO and University of Tasmania

HYDRO POWER

A tidal energy turbine has been installed in the Tamar estuary in Launceston, Tasmania, to assess its performance. The 2.4 metre-wide prototype is part of a project by the Australian Maritime College and Sydney-based MAKO Tidal Turbines.

The site near Reid Rock was chosen for its optimal current speed. The turbine is mounted beneath a floating platform and anchored on the east side of the estuary. The project aims to explore tidal energy's potential as a consistent renewable source, contributing to local energy needs.

MAKO will study the turbine's operation in real-world conditions, assessing factors like turbulence and biofouling that may affect performance. The initiative is positioned to enhance Australia's role in the global tidal energy industry.
