Tamil Nadu Initiates Project to Save Kariyachalli Island from Erosion

The Tamil Nadu government has launched a project to combat erosion on Kariyachalli Island, which has lost 71.37% of its landmass since 1969. The initiative will deploy 8,500 artificial reefs over 18 months, with a budget of ₹50 crore, as part of a broader effort to protect the Gulf of Mannar islands and enhance biodiversity. Monitoring of the project will continue for five years after its completion.
