Tampa Bay Community Sends 40,000 Pounds of Aid to Hurricane-Affected Jamaica

DEFENSE

The Tampa Bay community has delivered over 40,000 pounds of supplies to Jamaica following Hurricane Melissa. The aid was coordinated by Tampa Cares, with involvement from the Caribbean American National Development Organization, Caribbean Community Association, and local partners such as The Jerk Hut and USF Health.

Francis Joseph oversaw the distribution, collaborating with Food for the Poor to ensure donations reached affected communities. While key tourism areas are recovering, outer areas of Kingston and eastern Jamaica have suffered significant damage.

Donations included medical supplies, hygiene products, food, solar lanterns, and water filtration straws. USF Health provided medical supplies to the University of the West Indies hospital. The distribution involved volunteers and Jamaica's defense force, with efforts supported by organizations like UNICEF and the World Food Programme. Joseph noted that this initial relief phase marks the beginning of a long recovery process for Jamaica.
