Tesla Texas Lithium Refinery Aims for Energy Independence and Battery Mineral Processing
NATURAL GAS
Tesla's Texas Lithium Refinery, located near Corpus Christi, aims to bolster North American energy independence by processing critical battery minerals. With a multi-billion-dollar investment and groundbreaking in 2023, the facility is expected to produce battery-grade lithium hydroxide by 2026 using an innovative acid-free method that reduces hazardous waste and natural gas consumption. Targeting a capacity of around 50 GWh, the refinery will support the production of hundreds of thousands of electric vehicles annually, decreasing reliance on foreign lithium processing and enhancing sustainability efforts.
