Tokyo's Train Operators Shift Towards Renewable Energy to Achieve Carbon Neutrality by 2050
GEOTHERMAL
In Japan, train operators are increasingly adopting renewable energy to support the country's goal of carbon neutrality by 2050. Currently, 75% of train energy comes from thermal power, but the transport ministry aims to halve carbon dioxide emissions by the 2030s.
Notable initiatives include green streetcars in Tochigi powered by biomass and solar energy, and Tokyo's Setagaya line, which has exclusively run on renewable sources since 2019. While the transition to green energy presents challenges and costs, train companies are committed to reducing emissions significantly.
