On August 21, 1967, two US Navy A-6 Intruders from VA-196 were shot down by Chinese J-6 fighters during a mission over North Vietnam. The mission faced heavy enemy fire and severe weather conditions. Commander Leo Profilet's A-6 was hit by a surface-to-air missile, leading to his capture along with his bombardier.
One A-6 returned, while the fate of the other two was confirmed by Chinese radio, which announced the downing of the aircraft within Chinese airspace. The incident resulted in significant losses for the squadron.
