Ukrainian Armor CEO Discusses Defense Industry Challenges and Innovations Amid Bureaucratic Hurdles

DEFENSE

Ukraine's defense industry contributes a significant one-third to the country's GDP growth but grapples with funding shortages. Ukrainian Armor CEO Vladyslav Belbas highlighted the recent successful testing of the Protector unmanned ground vehicle, designed for logistics and combat tasks, with a payload capacity of one ton and an operational range exceeding 10 km.

The company is shifting towards FPV drones, producing 60mm mortar rounds integrated into drone delivery systems, maintaining competitive pricing. Despite an estimated annual military output capacity of $35 billion, current production hovers around $15 billion due to bureaucratic procurement processes.

Belbas criticized the bureaucracy's impact on timely supplies to the Armed Forces and emphasized the need for transparent funding mechanisms to attract Western investment. He noted that competition is growing in the defense sector, with more private manufacturers emerging, which he views positively for quality improvement. However, he expressed concerns about the effectiveness of export restrictions and the necessity for cooperation with Western partners to enhance production capacity.
