UNMAS Enhances Mine Action and Weapons Management in Democratic Republic of the Congo

DEFENSE

The United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS) is enhancing mine action and weapons management in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to address the threats posed by mines and explosive remnants of war. With support from MONUSCO, UNMAS has deployed an IED Disposal team in Beni and is facilitating the safe management of weapons and ammunition, amid concerns over approximately 950,000 illegally circulating weapons. The initiative aligns with the DRC's National Action Plan for Small Arms and Light Weapons Control and aims to strengthen the legal framework for mine action and improve the capacity for managing contamination.
