U.S. Air Force to Operate Retired F-117 Nighthawk Jets Until 2034

DEFENSE

The U.S. Air Force will operate retired F-117 Nighthawk jets until at least 2034, with 45 of the 64 built remaining airworthy. Initially retired in 2008, these aircraft are primarily used for training and experimentation, serving as 'red air' adversaries in exercises and test assets for radar and infrared systems. The fleet will be gradually reduced through controlled demilitarization and museum transfers.
