US Army 2BCT Advances sUAS Training and Supply Chain Efforts Amid Challenges

DEFENSE

The 2nd Brigade Combat Team (2BCT), 10th Mountain Division, is enhancing Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems (sUAS) training in response to the deactivation of cavalry squadrons and Military Intelligence companies. A Multifunctional Reconnaissance Company (MFRC) was established to provide organic reconnaissance capabilities and train sUAS operators across the brigade.

However, supply chain challenges hinder the maintenance of sUAS systems, with 85% of MFRC Vesper drones rendered non-mission capable due to inadequate repair parts. The Army currently relies on Government Purchase Cards (GPC) for parts acquisition, which is insufficient for maintaining operational readiness.

Recommendations include establishing dedicated supply lines for sUAS components and integrating maintenance systems with existing Department of War protocols. Additionally, the Army is exploring decentralized training models to enhance operator proficiency and streamline access to airspace for sUAS operations.
