U.S. Army Deploys M7 6.8mm Rifle to Replace M4A1 in Combat Units
DEFENSE
The U.S. Army has officially deployed the M7 6.8x51mm rifle, designed to replace the M4A1 in combat units. Announced in May 2025, the M7 enhances squad lethality with greater range and better barrier defeat.
It is part of the Next Generation Squad Weapons program and features a modular design with ambidextrous controls. The XM157 fire control optic will standardize aiming systems in the Close Combat Force. Training and operational testing are underway, with plans for broader adoption across units.
