DEFENSE
The U.S. Department of Defense has awarded General Dynamics Electric Boat a $2.28 billion contract for the construction of five Columbia-class ballistic missile submarines, set to replace the aging Ohio-class fleet.
These submarines, the largest ever built for the Navy, will support U.S. deterrent capabilities amid rising global tensions, with a total procurement cost of $126.4 billion. The first Columbia-class submarine was delivered in 2021, and replacements are scheduled to begin in 2031.
