U.S. Navy Establishes Unmanned Patrol Squadron VUP-11 to Enhance Maritime Surveillance
On November 13, 2025, the U.S. Navy established Unmanned Patrol Squadron (VUP) 11, its second operational MQ-4C Triton squadron, at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island, Washington. VUP-11, known as the 'Dark Horses,' will operate under Patrol and Reconnaissance Wing 10.
The MQ-4C Triton is a high-altitude long-endurance unmanned aircraft system designed for intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) missions. This squadron aims to enhance the Navy's maritime patrol capabilities and works alongside the P-8A Poseidon aircraft.
The establishment of VUP-11 reflects the Navy's commitment to advanced unmanned technology and its objective to strengthen maritime surveillance and reconnaissance operations.
