U.S. Navy Transfers Base Maintenance Command to Navy Installations Command

DEFENSE

The U.S. Navy has shifted command of installation maintenance and public works to Commander, Navy Installations Command (CNIC), effective Feb. 22, 2026. Approximately 1,700 personnel from Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command (NAVFAC) will report directly to installation commanding officers, enhancing local decision-making authority.

This realignment aims to improve support for naval operations, ensuring commanders can address mission-critical needs effectively. No job losses are expected as personnel remain in their roles under a new command structure.
