US Navy Upgrades USS Zumwalt with Hypersonic Missiles for Indo-Pacific Operations

DEFENSE

The USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) is undergoing significant upgrades, including the integration of Common Hypersonic Glide Bodies (C-HGBs), as part of an $8 billion modernization initiative for Zumwalt-class destroyers. This shift transforms the vessel from a naval gunfire support role to a long-range strike platform, with all three Zumwalt-class destroyers and additional Virginia-class submarines expected to be operational at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam by mid-2028.

The U.S. Navy aims to have five hypersonic-capable vessels in the Indo-Pacific by 2030 to enhance regional deterrence.
