U.S. Producers Eye Montney Basin for Expansion Amidst Shrinking U.S. Drilling Prospects
U.S. oil and gas producers are increasingly targeting Western Canada's Montney basin for expansion as U.S. shale fields, particularly the Permian, become less attractive due to diminished drilling opportunities. The Montney, spanning 130,000 km in northeast British Columbia and northwest Alberta, is relatively untapped and is currently dominated by Canadian firms like ARC Resources and Tourmaline Oil.
The region produces approximately 10 billion cubic feet of natural gas daily, accounting for 50% of Canada's total production. Recent M&A activity in the Montney accounted for 28% of Canada's oilpatch transactions in 2023, with U.S. firms like Ovintiv making significant acquisitions. The Montney's lower land acquisition costs compared to the Permian and its long resource lifespan of over 45 years make it an attractive option for U.S. investors, despite previous declines in foreign direct investment in Canada's energy sector.
