USACE Breaks Ground on JBLM's First Mass Timber Barracks for 200 Soldiers
DEFENSE
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) broke ground on December 12, 2025, for a five-story, 105,000-square-foot mass timber barracks at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, intended to house 200 soldiers. This project is part of a pilot program initiated in 2023 to assess the effectiveness of mass timber in military construction, aiming to enhance environmental sustainability and soldier readiness. Data from the project will help shape future military construction standards, potentially positioning mass timber as a primary building material for the Department of War.
