USACE Progresses with Cleanup of Former Buxton Naval Facility Near Hatteras Lighthouse
DEFENSE
The United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) is advancing with the cleanup of the former Buxton Naval facility in North Carolina, having removed significant amounts of contaminated materials, including 3,500 cubic yards of petroleum-impacted sand and over 2 million pounds of debris. The project, which gained urgency after storm-related contamination in spring 2024, involves ongoing excavation efforts and is supported by the Buxton Restoration Advisory Board. A new area addressing lead contamination at a former firing range is also awaiting funding for the next fiscal year.
