Zambia Begins Construction of 100MW Chirundu Solar Plant with China Jigsco Energy Corporation
Zambia's Minister of Energy, Hon. Makozo Chikote, initiated the construction of a 100MW solar power plant in Chirundu, a project by ZESCO's Kafue Gorge Lower subsidiary in partnership with China Jigsco Energy Corporation.
This initiative supports Zambia's renewable energy goals and national energy security under President Hakainde Hichilema. The solar plant, covering 285 hectares near the Kafue Gorge Lower hydropower station, is part of a larger solar pipeline exceeding 1,000MW.
The project will create over 600 jobs during construction and maintain 100 permanent positions over 25 years. The USD 90 million investment includes a 15-kilometre transmission line. China Jigsco will ensure transparency and local engagement through a Special Purpose Vehicle, while ZESCO emphasizes solar as a key technology for immediate energy needs. The Chirundu Solar Plant is the first phase of a planned 200MW solar development.
