AASA Supports IATA's CO₂ Connect for Emissions Transparency Among African Airlines

SUSTAINABLE AVIATION FUEL

The Airlines Association of Southern Africa (AASA) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) to promote the IATA CO₂ Connect emissions calculator among its 16 member airlines. AASA is the first airline association to formally support this initiative, which aims to enhance emissions measurement and reporting through verified operational data and a standardized methodology.

This tool helps airlines access trusted emissions data, which is especially important in markets with carbon taxes like South Africa. IATA will provide support to help AASA and its members integrate the system and contribute high-quality fuel burn data.

Globally, over 150 airlines contribute to CO₂ Connect, with more than 90 supplying verified data. The initiative is aligned with ISO 14083 and includes reductions from Sustainable Aviation Fuel usage.
