Bangladesh Agricultural University Develops Nano-Biochar-Enriched Urea Fertilizer to Boost Crop Productivity

AMMONIA

A research team at Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) has developed nano-biochar-enriched nano urea fertilizer to enhance crop productivity and minimize fertilizer wastage in Bangladesh. Conventional granular urea has an efficiency of only 30-40%, leading to considerable financial losses and environmental issues.

The new nano urea, with particle sizes of 20-50 nanometers coated with nano carbon, offers a controlled nitrogen release, improving nitrogen use efficiency to 75-85%. This innovation reduces ammonia loss by 80-90%, nitrate leaching by 65-75%, and nitrogen oxide emissions by 40-50%.

Laboratory results indicate potential rice yield increases of 10-25% and protein content enhancements of 8-12%. Field trials are expected to start after the next Boro season. The initiative aims to decrease reliance on urea imports and promote sustainable agriculture in Bangladesh.
