DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

The Birmingham City Council has scheduled a public hearing for January 13, 2026, at 9:30 a.m. to discuss a temporary moratorium on data center development. The decision aims to assess the potential impacts of data centers, including environmental strain, energy consumption, and economic effects.

City officials have received recommendations from the Office of the City Attorney and the Planning, Engineering and Permits Department. Council President Wardine T. Alexander noted that many concerns raised by the community are similar to those in other municipalities, highlighting the need to evaluate the economic impact and workforce development related to data centers. The upcoming hearing will allow residents to voice their concerns while officials continue to review zoning and other challenges associated with large-scale data center projects.
