Bureau of Meteorology Upgrades Infrastructure Amid User Experience Challenges
The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) is overhauling its infrastructure through the ROBUST technology program, investing A$866 million by mid-2024 in cybersecurity, data centers, and the national observing network. This modernization aims to enhance environmental intelligence delivery to Australians.
However, the launch of the new website coincided with severe weather, causing user frustration due to navigational changes and radar display issues. In response to backlash, BOM reverted certain radar visuals and committed to rapid improvements.
The agency emphasized the importance of user-centered design and early testing to avoid future missteps. The successful delivery of weather intelligence is crucial for agriculture, aviation, and emergency services, impacting national safety and security. BOM's strategy moving forward includes prioritizing mission-oriented features, early wins for users, co-design with stakeholders, and transparent communication about updates and challenges.
