CESE Advocates for Nuclear Energy in EU Decarbonization Strategy and Investment Needs
The European Economic and Social Committee (CESE) has adopted an opinion emphasizing the central role of nuclear energy in the EU's clean energy mix, essential for phasing out fossil fuels and achieving decarbonization goals. CESE highlights that nuclear power ensures safe, reliable, low-emission electricity critical for network stability and industrial transition, impacting traditional sectors like steel and cement, as well as emerging industries such as data centers.
The opinion reviews the 8th Nuclear Illustrative Program (PINC) from June 2025, which outlines the need for approximately €241 billion in investments by 2050 for maintaining existing reactors, constructing new facilities, and developing innovative technologies. CESE calls for clear regulatory and financial measures from the Commission to facilitate investment and enhance public dialogue to build trust in energy choices.
