Chinese Companies Increasingly Establishing Presence in Singapore Amid US-China Geopolitical Tensions

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

Chinese companies are increasingly relocating to Singapore to mitigate operational risks from escalating geopolitical tensions with the US. This trend, referred to as 'Singapore-washing', involves firms moving to the trade-focused city-state to bypass tariffs, export restrictions, and political risks.

The movement began during Donald Trump's first term and has accelerated, with establishment applications rising year-over-year by approximately 15-20%, according to InCorp Group. Industries involved include critical minerals, data centers, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology.

Companies such as Terahop, DayOne, Manus AI, and ChemLex are now based in Singapore. Singapore offers relatively low import tariffs to the US, a reputation for neutrality, and access to free trade agreements.

However, it is not a safe haven, as the US intensifies scrutiny on technology firms with Chinese ties, and Singapore faces compliance risks. The strategy primarily protects smaller entities rather than larger firms, which still face regulatory challenges.
