Connecticut Explores Nuclear Power Expansion to Lower Electricity Costs

FUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER

Connecticut is considering an expansion of nuclear power to address high electricity costs affecting residents. The state's environmental department is conducting research through a series of public meetings focused on carbon-free generation methods.

Since 1970, the Millstone nuclear power plant has been a significant electricity source, generating 33% of the state's in-state electricity in 2023. Governor Ned Lamont supports increasing supply to solve energy issues, while the state collaborates with others, including Massachusetts and Tennessee, to explore nuclear options.

Concerns about health and safety persist, particularly following historical setbacks in the nuclear industry. Advanced modular reactors are being evaluated as part of this renewed interest. Any expansion would require approval from the Nuclear Regulatory Commission, which oversees the industry.
