Copernicus Satellite Maps Wildfires Near Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine

FUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER

Wildfires near the closed Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine prompted the activation of the Copernicus Emergency Mapping Service, with satellite imagery revealing the extent of the fires. Although heavy rain helped extinguish most flames, over 500 firefighters and multiple fire engines remained on-site to manage residual smoldering, amid concerns of increased radiation exposure from burning contaminated materials. This year's fires have intensified due to a dry forest floor following a mild winter and spring.
