Delaware DNREC Blocks Project Washington Data Center Under Coastal Zone Act
DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE
Delaware's DNREC has prohibited the Project Washington data center near Delaware City, citing violations of the Coastal Zone Act. Planned by Starwood Digital Ventures, the project proposed over 500 backup generators and significant diesel fuel storage.
Developers have 14 days to appeal the decision. The Coastal Zone Act, established in 1971, restricts heavy industrial development along the state's coast. The project was deemed to pose significant environmental risks, including potential nitrogen oxide emissions exceeding those of the Delaware City Refinery.
