Equinix's Lelystad Data Center May Use 66x More Power Than Initially Estimated
DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE
Equinix's planned data center in Lelystad could consume up to 150 megawatts, significantly exceeding initial estimates of 3,000 to 5,000 households. Experts suggest it could equate to the power usage of 200,000 households, nearly double the current total consumption in Lelystad.
The project circumvents a national ban on large data centers due to its smaller land footprint. While located near a power station to mitigate grid stress, concerns remain about its environmental impact over its projected 15-25 year lifespan.
