EU Commission Proposes Energy Efficiency Measures for Data Centers to Support AI Growth
The EU Commission aims to establish Europe as a leading AI continent, anticipating a significant increase in data center energy consumption. By 2030, European data centers are expected to consume nearly double the current energy, with Denmark's usage projected to quadruple to 8 TWh in five years.
To address this, SYNERGI has introduced a political proposal focusing on three strategies: Reduce, Re-use, Respond, emphasizing the need for energy-efficient data centers that recycle waste heat and adapt to green energy demands. Data centers are projected to contribute 11.4 billion DKK to Denmark's GDP and support 18,000 jobs by 2028. The EU Commission plans to release an energy efficiency package for data centers in early 2026, highlighting the inefficient use of waste heat across the EU and the potential for modernizing data center operations.
