Fortescue Green Pioneer: First Ammonia Dual-Powered Vessel Completes Initial Voyage
Fortescue's Green Pioneer, the world's first ammonia dual-powered vessel, departed Singapore in January 2025, heading to Southampton for regulatory demonstration and then to Canary Wharf. The vessel showcases ammonia as a viable marine fuel, with plans for Fortescue to retrofit its fleet with ammonia engines by 2030.
Currently, about 99.1% of the operational fleet uses alternative fuels, with ammonia representing 0.5% of newbuilds. Ammonia, produced primarily from fossil fuels, can be made zero-emissions when derived from renewable energy.
Fortescue aims to ship 190-200 million tonnes of iron ore by 2025 and reduce shipping emissions intensity by 50% by 2030. The Green Pioneer underwent conversion at Seatrium Benoi, incorporating ammonia fuel systems and dual-fuel engines. Operational challenges include regulatory frameworks and the supply of certified green ammonia.
