Fortum Partners with Steady Energy to Develop Small Modular Reactor for District Heating

Fortum has partnered with Steady Energy to advance the development of the LDR-50 small modular reactor (SMR) for district heating, signing a framework agreement that includes a €2.1 million investment. The reactor, which has been in development since 2020, aims to begin construction in 2029, following a safety assessment by the Finnish Radiation & Nuclear Safety Authority scheduled for June 2025. Steady Energy currently has agreements for 15 reactors and is pursuing projects in Helsinki, Kuopio, and Kerava.
