Gene Amdahl's Vision for Wafer-Scale Integration in Computing Ahead of Its Time
DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE
Gene Amdahl, architect of IBM's System/360, aimed to create wafer-scale processors with Trilogy Systems Corp. in the early 1980s. His ambitious plan involved using entire silicon wafers as processors, challenging traditional chip manufacturing and promising supercomputer performance in compact systems.
However, Trilogy struggled to commercialize the technology and eventually merged with Elxsi in 1985, marking the end of its independent pursuit. Amdahl's concepts of fault tolerance and high performance density have since become relevant in today's AI chip designs.
