Georgia Power Secures $15B Grid Expansion Deal Ahead of Public Hearings
Georgia Power reached a stipulated agreement with the Public Utility Commission (PUC) staff to approve a $15 billion grid expansion project. This buildout will increase capacity by approximately five times that of the recently constructed nuclear reactors at Plant Vogtle, focusing on gas and battery resources to support the growing data center sector.
This agreement marks a significant shift from the regulatory staff's initial position, which included demands for strict conditions on project execution. The decision comes amid a recent shakeup in the PUC, where two commissioners were ousted by voters. The current board, scheduled to vote on the deal next week, has opted not to postpone the decision despite the impending transition to new members.
