Hermiston City Council Reduces Electric Franchise Fees, Lowering Bills for Residents

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

The Hermiston City Council has approved a reduction of electric franchise fees from 7% to 4% for all customers, effective in 2026. This change is expected to save average households between $40 and $60 annually.

The decision follows a significant increase in franchise fee revenues attributed to the growth of data centers in the area. Although the city had an incentive program for large power users, it saw little uptake, prompting the council to eliminate it and reduce fees for all.

City officials estimate that while residents will benefit from the fee reduction, data centers will continue to contribute $1 to $2 million more annually in franchise fees due to their growth. The changes aim to balance cost savings for residents with the city's long-term economic sustainability.
