HGP Intelligent Energy Seeks Approval to Utilize Navy Nuclear Reactors for AI Data Centers in Tennessee
DEFENSEDATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE
HGP Intelligent Energy has submitted a proposal to the U.S. Department of Energy to repurpose two decommissioned Navy nuclear reactors to power a new AI data center at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee, potentially generating 450 to 520 megawatts. The project, estimated to cost $2.1 billion, aims to utilize the reactors more cost-effectively than building new nuclear facilities, with HGP seeking a loan guarantee from the Department of Energy and plans for revenue sharing and spent fuel storage.
