Hydro-Québec Proposes New Electricity Tariff for Data Centers and Blockchain Operations
DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE
Hydro-Québec has proposed a new electricity tariff of 13 cents per kWh for data centers exceeding 5 MW, nearly double the residential rate. This initiative, pending approval from the Régie de l'énergie, aims to address economic and environmental concerns by ensuring high-consumption businesses bear a larger share of electricity costs.
Existing data centers will have a five-year transition to the new rate, while blockchain operations will face an increased tariff of 19.5 cents per kWh. Québec currently hosts around 80 data centers consuming approximately 200 MW.
