Indiana Lawmaker Proposes Water Permits for Large Data Centers to Protect Water Quality

DATA AND AI INFRASTRUCTURE

Rep. Alex Burton has proposed legislation in Indiana that would require data centers using over 10 million gallons of water monthly to obtain permits from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, detailing their water usage and conservation measures.

This initiative aims to address public concerns about water quality and could affect around 70 data centers in the state. While the Citizens Action Coalition supports the bill, they are advocating for improved public access to permit information, and the Indiana Chamber of Commerce calls for a more tailored permitting process.
