Jammu and Kashmir Enhances Weather Forecasting with AI and Doppler Radars under Mission Mausam
Jammu and Kashmir is a focus area in the Centre's initiative to modernize weather forecasting and disaster early warning systems, with three Doppler Weather Radars operational in the region. These radars, located at Banihal Top, Jammu, and Srinagar, are part of a nationwide network aimed at improving monitoring of extreme weather events, addressing the region's vulnerability to hazards like heavy rainfall and landslides.
The Ministry of Earth Sciences reported significant enhancements in forecasting capabilities through the Mithuna Forecast System, utilizing artificial intelligence for improved accuracy in weather predictions. A dedicated virtual centre has been established to coordinate AI applications in weather prediction.
Additionally, global AI weather models are being tested on the Arunika supercomputer, enabling hyperlocal forecasting for agriculture and disaster management. Improvements in forecast dissemination and a multi-hazard impact early warning system have increased forecasting skill for severe weather events by 30 to 40 percent over the past decade.
