Japan Reactivates Kashiwazaki-Kariwa Nuclear Power Plant Amid Energy Strategy Shift
FUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER
On February 9, Japan will restart the Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power plant, the largest in the world, marking a significant shift in its energy policy post-Fukushima. The decision, made by Niigata prefecture in December, reflects Japan's need for stable energy sources amid rising fossil fuel dependence and climate goals.
TEPCO will oversee the restart, which aims to regain nuclear's 30% share of electricity generation by 2050. The move is divisive among locals concerned about seismic risks but demonstrates Japan's intent to enhance energy autonomy.
