Johnston County to Switch to Chlorine-Only Treatment for Water System Maintenance

AMMONIA

Johnston County Public Utilities will switch to chlorine-only disinfection for the Johnston West water system starting February 26, 2026, as part of annual maintenance. This change is mandated by regulations to prevent bacteria resistance.

The treatment will last approximately six weeks, returning to the normal mixture around April 2, 2026. Customers using kidney dialysis machines should be aware of higher chlorine levels, while tropical fish owners may face potential harm. Flushing of the system will also occur to expedite chloramine removal.
