The Joplin City Council has proposed a special election on April 7 to renew a half-cent sales tax intended for the Police and Firemen's Pension Fund, which can now be redirected for police and fire service purposes due to a recent state law change. Originally approved as Proposition B in 2019, the tax is expected to fully fund the pension by mid-2027. The council meeting will also address public hearings on annexation and zoning for a proposed data center in Wildwood Ranch.
