Kenya Signs MoU with KenGen for First Nuclear Power Plant in Siaya County

FUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER

Kenya has formalized a partnership between the Nuclear Power and Energy Agency (NuPEA) and the Kenya Electricity Generating Company (KenGen) to develop its first nuclear power plant, with an estimated cost of Sh500 billion. Siaya county has been selected as the preferred location, and construction is expected to commence in 2027.

KenGen will serve as the owner-operator of the facility, ensuring compliance with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) standards. The initial phase aims to generate approximately 2,000 MW of electricity, with plans to increase nuclear capacity to 6,000 MW.

The government seeks to add about 10,000 MW to the national grid to support industrialization. A Joint Engagement Framework will guide public engagement and transparency throughout the nuclear planning process. Local leaders support the project, highlighting its potential for job creation and economic transformation.
