LLNL and Fraunhofer ILT Collaborate on Next-Gen Inertial Fusion Lasers for Power Plants
FUSION & ADVANCED NUCLEAR POWER
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) and the Fraunhofer Institute for Laser Technology ILT are collaborating on the ICONIC-FL project to advance laser-ignited inertial fusion for industrial use. The initiative focuses on developing high-energy diode-pumped solid-state lasers capable of firing about 15 shots per second, following LLNL's recent breakthrough in energy extraction from fusion. This partnership aims to enhance the efficiency and reliability of laser systems, potentially paving the way for climate-neutral electricity generation.
