Lloyd's Register, EXMAR, and Belgian FPS Develop Interim Guidelines for Ammonia as Marine Fuel

AMMONIA

Lloyd's Register (LR), EXMAR, and the Belgian Federal Public Service (FPS) for Mobility and Transport have developed interim guidelines for the safe use of ammonia cargo as fuel on gas carriers. This effort follows an amendment to the IGC Code that removed restrictions on ammonia consumption as fuel.

The guidelines were drafted and refined in collaboration with the IMO Correspondence Group and are expected to be approved at MSC 111 in May 2026. The new framework facilitates the design of ammonia-fueled vessels while prioritizing safety.

Ammonia is recognized for its zero-carbon potential, and this initiative marks a significant step in decarbonizing marine operations. The collaboration demonstrates the effective partnership between industry leaders and regulators to support the transition to alternative fuels.
